A cellar-born blend that plays with whole cluster and varietal co-fermentations, the Perfectionist is vinified and aged in concrete with no oak influence on the wine.

 


 

2017 

55% Syrah, 37% Grenache, 4% Mourvedre, 4% Graciano

A scent that speaks of granite cooled by a mountain stream, slate right after a cloudburst.  Hints of black tea and sage, warmed by the summer sun and the mild salinity of an ocean breeze.  All underpinned by round fruit flavors of blueberry and fig.  While it is easy to become lost in the umami of smoked meats, iron minerality and olive tapenade flavors on the tongue, this wine carries itself with such a graceful elegance that those notes are seamlessly intertwined with huckleberry and plum.  The tannins creep slowly, capturing you before you even realize they have appeared then releasing into the complex flavors that rest in your mouth and nose long after your sip is gone.  Drink now through 2030.

2016

74% Syrah, 17% Mourvèdre, 9% Grenache

In a quest to produce wines that represent their origins and the cellars they are produced in, the Perfectionist is born. A pursuit of pure fun winemaking. Whole-cluster syrah, grenache and mourvedre are co-fermented in concrete cubes, with natural yeast driving the fermentation. The wine is a free spirit blend. Aged 18 months in concrete tanks, bottled and cellared for an additional year. The wine is meant to be a bookend of winemaking styles. Earthy complex and not ordinary. Drink now thru 2026.

2014

72% Syrah, 23% Grenache, 5% Mourvèdre

We wisely held onto the 2014 Perfectionist as your Syrah offering for the year; the 2015 vintage’s drought and bloom issues resulted in very low yields of Syrah. Comprised of Estate fruit, Perfectionist is a concrete co-fermentation of whole cluster Syrah and Grenache aged for 18 months in concrete tanks. The power, tannin, and ripe focus of this wine is a direct expression of the fruit, the vines, and a ripe 2014 growing season. Blackberry, vanilla bean, and ripe blueberries pull across a lengthy finish. The quest for perfection keeps us learning, growing, and evolving. Drink now through 2025.

2013

68% Syrah, 17% Mourvèdre, 15% Grenache

This is my playful attempt at being less concerned with perfection and focusing on being dynamic, changing things on the fly and creating a wine that is truly its own. Perfectionist uses the coolest climate syrah blocks from the estate, we ferment them whole cluster, getting a phenolic structure that stands out from other wines. Cofermenting with the grenache and mourvédre allows for a rare, individualistic wine. This is the opposite of diligent blending. Aged in concrete. Drink through 2023

2012

77% Syrah, 12% Mourvèdre, 11% Grenache

A gorgeous wine that tells the story of pursuit.  A 100% estate wine that starts its life in concrete. Whole cluster syrah is co-fermented with grenache and mourvèdre. Left on the skins for 35 days, the wine exhibits dark complexities of fig, liquorice and dried sage. This is the second vintage of this wine and I believe a wine with this structure will last for a decade or more. Enjoy!

62% Syrah, 27% Mourvèdre, 7% Grenache, 4% Tannat

Never stop learning and never give up. Does perfectionism exist? A whole-cluster fermented, concrete aged wine that exhibits earth and tar subtleties with a chewy minerality. A gorgeous wine in the eyes of the beholder. Dark black fruits of fig, blackberry, and liquorice spice evolve into a life changing experience. Perhaps the most food friendly wine to date.
